SILVER SPRING, MD — A 58-year-old rehabilitation counselor from Silver Spring got a big surprise when he was walking his dog recently. That's when he checked his numbers on the Maryland Lottery app and discovered he'd won $50,000.

“I literally jumped for joy," the man told lottery officials, after learning his numbers were chosen in the Aug. 22 midday Pick 5.

The next thing the man did was call his wife to tell her the good news. "She was very, very happy, sort of laughing and crying on the phone," he said.

The man had been playing the same set of numbers taken from his children's birthdays two or three times a week. But, in Monday's drawing, they turned out to be his lucky numbers.

The lottery-winner told officials that the win was certainly a welcome one, since his extended family had recently experienced a pre-vacation nightmare involving missing payments.

“I’m sure we will get this all figured out eventually, but this does ease the worry for all of us,” he said.

The Silver Spring winner purchased his Pick 5 ticket for $1 at the Giant Food #366 located at 8750 Arliss St., in Silver Spring. For selling the winning ticket, the store will receive a $500 bonus from the lottery.
