$50K Lottery Win Will Help Silver Spring Student Pay For College

SILVER SPRING, MD — A 2o-year-old student from Silver Spring got a $50,000 boost to her higher education funding thanks to a winning Gold 50 scratch-off ticket from the Maryland Lottery, according to a release.

Last week, the Montgomery County resident made a pitstop at the Convenience Mart in Silver Spring to grab something to drink, according to a release. The woman told officials that she doesn't play lottery games that often, but on that day she decided to use her extra $10 to buy the Gold X50 scratch-off ticket.

“I saw the 50X symbol and the $1,000 prize underneath and I just screamed and screamed,” she said, in a release

When the Silver Spring resident discovered at home that she'd bought a winning ticket, everyone screamed in joy.

“It’s just so crazy because I don’t really play,” she said.

With the help of her father, the winning player learned that she needed to go to lottery headquarters to claim her $50,000 prize. She told lottery officials that she was going to use her winnings to pay for her tuition when she starts school in the fall. She may also spend some of it to take a vacation, according to the release.
