Activists Plan Protests In Montgomery Co To Protect Mueller Probe

Protests will be held in Silver Spring and Rockville on Nov. 8 to rally around Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

SILVER SPRING, MD — Protests have been scheduled in Montgomery County Thursday to protect Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation. The protests, which are also taking place nationwide, come after President Donald Trump fired Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Wednesday.

Led by the activist group MoveOn, local protestors are expected to convene in Silver Spring and Rockville. According to the organization's website, the protest at Silver Spring Civic Center Plaza is scheduled for 5 p.m. The Rockville protest is at 25 Courthouse Square Park and is set to start at 5:30 p.m.

They're part of a nationwide "rapid response" effort that includes more than 900 protests across the country.

"Donald Trump has installed a crony to oversee the special counsel's Trump-Russia investigation, crossing a red line set to protect the investigation," MoveOn said on its website.

Organizers are worried that the integrity of the Mueller probe will be compromised by Matthew Whitaker, who is replacing Sessions and overseeing the investigation.

Mueller has been conducting an investigation into Russian interference during the 2016 election and possible collusion with the Trump campaign. Trump, on multiple occasions, has called the probe a "witch hunt."

Sessions, a Trump ally who threw his weight behind the president in the 2016 election, recused himself in March 2017. The decision fueled a long-standing feud between Trump and Sessions.
