The Montgomery County Police Department said Colato Salamanca was arrested early Monday and charged with first-degree murder and motor vehicle theft. He is awaiting extradition from North Carolina.

Charges in the case stem from a Saturday welfare check in Burtonsville that led to the discovery of a deceased woman, since identified as his mother, Glenda Patricia Salamanca Reyes.

Montgomery County Police said Salamanca Reyes was found after officers were dispatched to the 3900 block of Blackburn Lane, shortly before 6:30 p.m. on Saturday.

The welfare check had been requested after Salamanca Reyes did not report to work. Police did not detail who requested the welfare check.

At the scene, Salamanca Reyes was found dead in a hallway. An autopsy conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner on Sunday determined she died from multiple stab wounds.

An investigation carried out by police found Salamanca Reyes lived with her 28-year-old son.

Incidentally, as police were arriving at the scene, Salamanca Reyes' white 2019 Jeep Compass was seen leaving the parking lot of the apartment complex.

After authorities filed the stolen car into the National Crime Information Center, the car was tracked going southbound on Interstate 95.

Colato Salamanca was later arrested at a truck stop in Salisbury, North Carolina, through a cross-state joint operation involving the U.S. Marshals Service.
