More than 30 children recently attended a Luau Respite event hosted by Easter Seals Greater Washington-Baltimore Region on August 11. Easter Seals Greater Washington-Baltimore Region has expanded its Respite Services Program to include “Little Warriors,” children of wounded soldiers. The purpose of the monthly events is two-fold: (1) to provide much-needed respite for wounded soldiers and spouses and (2) to provide individual support and fun activities for their children. The August event incorporated a luau theme and included various hands-on games and outdoor play, face painting, arts and crafts, and music. Each child (ages 6 weeks to 13 years) was paired with a trained volunteer throughout the event.
Statistics reveal that wounded warriors, their spouses and children have unique needs. Military families are faced with the challenges of relocation and adjusting to the physical limitations of the wounded parent. Many times it’s necessary that parents take a bit of a breather from their around-the-clock extraneous medical duties. Respite care allows them the ability to focus on
other necessary tasks, relieve stress, prevent burnout, or just take time for themselves. “Military families are at increased risk of depression and other symptoms of distress, and this respite intervention is a positive step in
creating a healthy and stable home environment,” said Brooke Kaiser, Easter Seals Respite Services Director.
