Blood Drive Honoring 2 Montgomery Firefighters Set For Oct. 26
The blood drive honors Carlos Alfaro and Carlos Alfaro Jr., a father and son firefighting duo who died more than a decade ago.
SILVER SPRING, MD — Montgomery County firefighters will host a blood drive on Saturday, Oct. 26 to honor two of their own.
Carlos Alfaro and Carlos Alfaro Jr. — a father and son duo who spent most of their careers at Station 16 in Silver Spring — died more than a decade ago. But their memories live on through the yearly blood drive.
Carlos Alfaro Jr. died in 2006 after Hepatitis C destroyed his liver. He got the viral infection while performing life-saving duties, according to authorities. His father died three years later from multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer commonly seen in people who were exposed to environmental carcinogens.

Both father and son received multiple blood transfusions, which the family said bought them more time with loved ones.
The Alfaro memorial blood drive was created in their honor. This year's blood drive will be held at Station 16 (111 University Blvd. E., Silver Spring) from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Click here to schedule an appointment.
