D.C. Man Charged With Attempted Murder In Silver Spring Shooting

A D.C. man has been charged with attempted murder in the Jan. 1 shooting of a Silver Spring man, Montgomery County Police said.

SILVER SPRING, MD — A D.C. man has been charged with attempted murder in the Jan. 1 shooting of a Silver Spring man, Montgomery County Police said.

Detectives have charged Maurice Ricks, 28, of Washington, D.C., with the attempted second-degree murder of a man on Jan. 1 in the 8500 block of 16th Street in Silver Spring, according to a news release.

About 6:05 p.m. that day, 2nd District officers responded to a report of a shooting and found the victim suffering from apparent gunshot wounds to his body. Officers provided life-saving measures to the victim until Montgomery County Fire Rescue arrived.

The victim was taken to an area hospital in critical condition, police said.

Investigators said that after an argument with the victim, Ricks drew a gun and shot the man.

Detectives identified Ricks as the suspect and obtained an arrest warrant for Ricks, charging him with attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault and use of a firearm in the commission of a violent felony.

Police said Ricks was arrested Jan. 13 by the U.S. Marshals Service in Washington, D.C., and then taken to a correctional facility where he is awaiting extradition to Montgomery County.
