“WHAT AM I LOOKING AT?”

This spring, the Silver Spring Camera Club focuses on abstract photography instead of the more traditional subjects such as landscapes or portraits. Abstracts present a unique challenge to photographers: They depend on creation or transformation of the subject. Some abstracts may contain identifiable subject matter, but the main emphasis is on pattern or a chaotic lack of pattern. Abstracts also rely on line, form, tone, texture, color, and rhythm.

Abstracts may be “created” by actually constructing a subject or by specialized techniques such as “painting” with light in a totally dark space. Abstracts may also be “found.” For example, a photographer could transform an everyday object such as a stack of colored saucers into a non-representational image.

As a rule, abstracts do not give the viewer a visual reference to the world he’s familiar with. For the photographer, abstracts give free rein to an intensely personal style and creative experimentation. For the viewer, the reaction to an abstract is primarily emotional and highly subjective. The most frequent response is, “What am I looking at?”

The Silver Spring Camera Club (SSCC) is a community-based organization committed to fostering photographic excellence and appreciation. It is the oldest camera club in the Washington, DC metropolitan area and has continuously served photography enthusiasts for over 60 years. The club meets every Thursday of the month, September-May, and presents guest speakers, holds monthly photo competitions, features education events and a discussion forum as well as field trips. SSCC welcomes everyone with an interest in photography, at all skill levels.
