Extra $4 Leads To $41K Win, Enjoyable Drink For Takoma Park Man

A Takoma Park man used an extra $4 to buy a soda and a Maryland Lottery ticket at a Silver Spring store and ended up winning $41,385.

SILVER SPRING, MD — A 71-year-old Takoma Park man recently stopped by the Corner Market & Pharmacy in Silver Spring to buy to two scratch-off tickets from the Maryland Lottery, something he does nearly every day. But this particular day was different.

Realizing that there was an extra $4 in his pocket, the man decided to purchase a cold drink and Racetrax ticket. While he enjoyed the drink, the Montgomery County resident told lottery officials that he liked the $41,385 prize he won from the Racetrax ticket better.

“I had just handed the guy the money for my scratch tickets when I reached for my car keys and felt the extra cash in my pocket,” the Takoma Park resident said. “I pulled it out, saw that it was four $1 bills, and added a Coke and a Racetrax ticket.”

Remembering a friend who was Racetrax player telling him that he'd won big on the simulated horse racing game, the lucky septuagenarian played the numbers 6, 4, 11 and 7 on the store's Maryland Lottery terminal in the July 25 race.

“It was such a good feeling knowing that I had this coming," the man told lottery officials. "I am going to share my good luck with my family.”

Corner Market & Pharmacy, which is located at 8309 Grubb Road in Silver Spring, will receive a $413.85 bonus from the Maryland Lottery for selling a winning Racetrax ticket of $10,000 or more.
