Local Schools Benefit from Back to School Grants from Action for Healthy Kids in Partnership with the Walmart Foundation

The Walmart Foundation is making going back to school easier for Montgomery County families

As kids in Montgomery County head back to school this fall, the Walmart Foundation is making going back to school easier for families, students and teachers at two Silver Spring schools.

This fall, students at Sligo Middle School and White Oak Middle School will benefit from part of $10.5 million in grants from the Walmart Foundation given to partners implementing school breakfast and nutrition education programs across the country. One of these partners, Action for Healthy Kids, is working to ensure students at these local schools have access to breakfast in the classroom and nutrition education.

These programs are especially important today, since over 77,00 people in Montgomery County face food insecurity, according to Feeding America.

According to the CDC, eating healthy is especially important for children and adolescents to maintain proper growth and development to protect disease and lack of nutrition can lead to lower performance and tardiness.
