Making Your Apartment Pet-Friendly
Many apartment renters have pets - check out our tips to make sure your new apartment is safe and comfortable for your four-legged friend!

For many renters on the hunt for a new apartment for rent, being able to bring their furry friends to their new space is an absolute must. Here at The Point at Silver Spring, we understand! That’s why we gladly allow residents to bring their pets when they come to live in our apartment building.*
The first step is finding an apartment building that allows pets, and the second step is making sure your new living space is pet-friendly – so both you and Fido are comfortable! Thankfully, we’ve got a few tips for you to make your apartment is safe and comfortable for your four-legged friends:
- Tip #1: Eliminate suffocation hazards. Even seemingly small items in your house could pose a big threat to your pet. Clip up or shorten any blinds chords in your home, and unplug electrical cords when not in use so your pet doesn’t get tangled. There could also be hazards you won’t be able to see from your height, so be sure to get down on the ground for a pet’s-eye view – regularly checking under the couch is especially important to find and eliminate hidden suffocation hazards.
- Tip #2: Proper storage of hazardous items. Common household items can also be dangerous to your pet. Both prescription and over-the-counter human medications, insecticides, cleaning products and fertilizers are just a few of the household items that can pose serious health risks to your pet. Especially for the more curious pets that like to sniff around, it’s vital to properly store these types of items properly so your pet can’t gain access to them. For a full list of hazardous items, check out the ASPCA’s most recent list of top pet toxins.
- Tip #3: Give them their own space. It’s important to carve out a space just for your pet in your apartment, so they feel they have an area all their own and feel secure in new surroundings when you’re not around. For example, if you’re carving out a space for your pup, place the dog bed, water source and toys in a comfortable corner of the bedroom or living room. Luckily for our Point at Silver Spring residents, our spacious apartments have plenty of room to create a cozy area that’s just for your pet!
- Tip #4: Be cognizant of the trash. Use a tight-fitting lid on your trash and take it out daily to avoid your pets rummaging through. Besides making a mess in your apartment, the trash can pose serious health risks for your pet – many people know that chocolate can be dangerous for dogs, but did you also know that grapes, raisins, sugar-free food and coffee grinds can also have potentially fatal outcomes for dogs?
- Tip #5: Research your indoor plants. An indoor plant can do wonders to brighten up a space, but you need to do your research before bringing one into your apartment. Certain plants – such as the aloe plant – are toxic when ingested by your cat or dog. If you’re unsure if your indoor plant is safe for your pet, head over to the ASPCA’s list of toxic and non-toxic plants for more information.
Following the tips above can help make sure your new luxury apartment is both safe and comfortable for your favorite furry friend. You want your pet to be happy inside your space, and when living in vibrant downtown Silver Spring, it’s inevitable that you’ll be happy outside of it, too!
