Man Charged In 'Suspicious' Murder Of 17-Year-Old Silver Spring Boy

Police arrested Tysean A. Lipford, 19, of Silver Spring for the murder of Christian Leroy Matthews, 17.

SILVER SPRING, MD — Montgomery County Police arrested a man involved in the suspicious death — now deemed a homicide — of a Silver Spring teenager that occurred Tuesday, March 21. (For more local crime news, subscribe to the Silver Spring Patch daily newsletter.)

At around 2:25 a.m. Tuesday morning, the Emergency Communications Center received a call reporting a suspicious situation in the 1000 block of Mondrian Terrace, police said.

The victim's sisters were in the home and heard a large commotion coming from the basement, where the victim lived. They then called 911, police said.

Officers responded to the home and located an unresponsive teenage male resident in the basement, police said. The victim was transported by Fire and Rescue to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

Police identified the victim as Christian Leroy Matthews, 17. Officers found suspicious marks on Matthews' neck.

On Thursday evening, investigators arrested Tysean A. Lipford, 19, of Silver Spring, and charged him with the first-degree murder of Matthews, police said.

Lipford, identified as the father of the victim's niece, allegedly confessed to the killing, police said.

Lipford is scheduled to have a bond review today at 1:00 p.m. in Rockville District Court, police said.
