Man Killed In Hours-Long Standoff In Silver Spring: Police

The shooting happened after emergency response and SWAT teams were called to an apartment in the 3300 block of Hampton Point Drive.

SILVER SPRING, MD — A man died Thursday morning after he was shot during an hours-long standoff with police in Silver Spring.

According to Montgomery County police, officers responded to an apartment in the 3300 block of Hampton Point Drive around 11:40 p.m. Wednesday after receiving a 911 call about a person in distress.

When police arrived, they found an adult man inside the apartment with his mother. According to police, the man was armed with a gun and gunshots were later heard from inside the residence.

Emergency response and SWAT teams were called to the apartment, police said. Around 2 a.m., authorities entered the apartment, Montgomery County police spokesperson Shiera Goff said during a news conference reported by WTOP.

"A decision was made to enter the apartment, where SWAT engaged the subject, and he was shot by officers," police said in a news release.

The man was taken to the hospital, where he later died, police said.

Authorities did not release the man's name.

The Maryland Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division is investigating the shooting.
