Pedestrian Killed After Car Drives Onto Sidewalk: Police

A pedestrian was killed after a car veered off the road, hit a stop sign, and drove onto the sidewalk in Silver Spring, police said.

SILVER SPRING, MD — A 65-year-old pedestrian was killed after a car veered off the road and onto the sidewalk in Silver Spring, according to authorities.

David Rafael Velasquez, of Silver Spring, was rushed to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he later died.

Montgomery County police said Velasquez was hit by a 2002 Toyota Camry near the intersection of New Hampshire and McCeney avenues around 12:26 p.m. A preliminary investigation revealed that the Toyota was on New Hampshire Avenue and trying to make a right onto McCenery Avenue just before the fatal collision.

According to police, the Toyota left the roadway and struck a stop sign before traveling across the service road and striking Velasquez, who was on the sidewalk.

The driver of the Toyota — identified as a 17-year-old from Prince George's County — was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.
