Reduce Vehicle-Related Thefts: Tips From Montgomery County Police

Montgomery County Police are reminding the public that criminals are on the hunt for unattended vehicles and property.

SILVER SPRING, MD — Having a vehicle, or property inside a vehicle, stolen leaves many victims feeling violated, cheated, and unsure of what's to come next.

Montgomery County Police are reminding the public that criminals are on the hunt for unattended vehicles and property. Most recently, a suspect stole someone's car in downtown Silver Spring.

The Centralized Auto Theft Section are offering residents tips on how they can prevent or reduce their risk of becoming a victim. Check out the list below:

  • Keep your keys with you at all times
    • Never leave a spare key or a valet key in your vehicle
  • Lock all windows and doors
  • Remove any valuables from the vehicle
  • Never leave a vehicle running if unattended
  • If your vehicle has a push-to-start ignition system, make sure the vehicle is turned off and locked before you leave
  • Park in well-lit and populated areas
  • If possible, park in a secure garage
  • Use a car alarm and/or anti-theft device
  • Use a vehicle locator device

Many vehicle-related crimes happen overnight, according to authorities. Police ask that residents call 911 if they observe any suspicious behavior or activity.
