Silver Spring Resident Wins $50K VaxU Scholarship From State

A Silver Spring resident won a $50,000 scholarship from a state of Maryland promotion that is encouraging residents to get vaccinated.

SILVER SPRING, MD — A Silver Spring resident is the latest winner in the state's VaxU Scholarship promotion, which aims to encourage young people to get vaccinated against the coronavirus.

The $50,000 scholarship can help cover tuition and fees at any public four-year college or university for teenagers vaccinated and living in Maryland.

“Promotions like this are just one more way that we are reinforcing the importance of getting every single Marylander that we can vaccinated against COVID-19, especially our young people,” said Gov. Larry Hogan in a statement when he announced the scholarship. “If any of our 12- to 17-year-olds or their parents needed another good reason, then now they can get vaccinated for a chance to win a $50,000 college scholarship.”

Two winners are randomly selected each week, beginning July 12 and running for eight weeks. Four winners will be announced on Labor Day to close out the promotion.

“This is an outstanding and innovative approach to incentivize our youth to learn more about the countless higher education opportunities that are available to them here in Maryland,” said MHEC Secretary Dr. James D. Fielder in the statement announcing the program. “We are proud to continue paving the way for access and success of their higher education goals.”
