Teen Charged With First-Degree Assault Over Blake HS Shooting

A 19-year-old from Silver Spring is facing a first-degree assault charge after a fight in a school parking lot injured another teen.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD โ€” Police have filed charges after the fight and shooting incident that took place Wednesday in a high school parking lot.

A release issued Thursday by the Montgomery County Police Department said Djibia Gombo, a 19-year-old from Silver Spring, was arrested and charged with first-degree assault.

Gombo remains held at the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit while awaiting a bond hearing.

The charges in the case are tied to a large fight that broke out in the parking lot of James Hubert Blake High School in Colesville. Multiple people were involved in the brawl.

Authorities were alerted to the incident around 11:30 a.m. A school security officer and a community engagement officer responded after being flagged, according to police.

Officials said a gun was recovered from the scene, and that it wasn't until a "short time later" that authorities were told that a 17-year-old boy had been treated for a gunshot wound at a nearby hospital.

Preliminary information suggests, according to authorities, that the 17-year-old was shot during the parking lot fight. Officials have not detailed the extent of the individual's injuries.

An investigation into the incident remains ongoing, and police say additional charges are pending.
