Thwarted Robber Tries To Steal $830K Of Jewelry From Silver Spring Sears

Montgomery County Police arrested a Silver Spring man after he tried to steal jewelry from a Sears, police said.

SILVER SPRING, MD — Montgomery County Police arrested a Silver Spring man for commercial burglary and theft offenses after he tried to steal over $800,000 of jewelry, police announced Thursday.

Daniel E. Grant, 34, attempted to steal the jewelry from the Sears department store located in the White Oak Shopping Center at 11255 New Hampshire Ave. at around 11:30 p.m., Friday, March 17, police said.

Grant waited inside the Silver Spring store until it closed for the evening at 11:15 p.m., police said. He proceeded to the jewelry department, where he used a hammer to break the glass from multiple display cases. Grant then put about $830,000 worth of jewelry into a Sears shopping bag that had obtained from inside the store, police said.

An alarm was activated and alerted to motion activity in several locations within the store, police said. Officers reported to the scene and saw Grant with his face concealed, wearing all dark clothing and gloves fleeing from the area of the jewelry department, police told Patch.

Grant fled to the front entrance of Sears and was immediately arrested by officers who were positioned outside the store. As he fled from responding officers inside the store, he left the hammer and the Sears shopping bag that contained the stolen jewelry, police said.

Grant was transported to the Central Processing Unit, where he was charged with two counts of commercial burglary and one count of theft. He was ordered to be held without bond.
