Two major construction projects on MD 410 (East West Highway) in Bethesda and Silver Spring will mean lane closures at times in June and July, starting Monday, say highway officials.
The pair of safety and resurfacing projects will improve MD 410 between MD 355 (Wisconsin Avenue) and MD 185 (Connecticut Avenue) in Bethesda and between Carey Lane and Fenton Street in Silver Spring. Weather permitting, this nearly $5 million investment for MD 410 will be complete by the end of the year.

The $2.8 million improvements between MD 355 and MD 185 include:
- Replacing and upgrading guardrail;
- Updating traffic signals at the intersections of MD 410 at Montgomery Avenue, Chelton Road, Waverly and Pearl streets;
- Constructing concrete bus pads in front of bus stops to be strong enough to support heavier vehicles; and
- Cleaning pipes to improve roadway drainage.
The $2 million improvements between Fenton Street and Carey Lane include:

- Constructing a mid-block pedestrian crossing west of Blair Mill Road and at Blair Mill Way;
- Improving traffic signals at the intersections of MD 410 at Fenton Street and MD 390 (16th Street); and
- Replacing the concrete median on MD 410 just east of US 29 (Colesville Road).
“Motorists and pedestrians should remain aware of changing traffic patterns inside the work zones on East West Highway,” said State Highway Administration District Engineer Brian Young. “Some phases of work will create noise, especially overnight. We appreciate the patience of area residents as we work to complete these two key safety improvement projects.”
Crews may temporarily close one lane on MD 410 from MD 355 to MD 185, weekdays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and overnight, Sunday through Thursday, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
To perform all phases of work on MD 410 from Fenton Street to Carey Lane, crews may temporarily close one lane, weekdays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and overnight, Sunday through Thursday, 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Nighttime work is scheduled the week of June 1, and will resume after July 5.
Both projects include upgrading curb ramps and driveways for handicapped access and replacing damaged sidewalk and curb and gutter. Crews will also patch, grind and resurface traffic lanes and add new pavement markings.
