Join FSGW for an afternoon of holiday cheer on Saturday, December 27 at the Washington Ethical Society. Like a great box of assorted chocolates, our holiday sampler will ravish your senses with a tasty and unusual selection of musical delights. Explore a wide range of musical traditions and enjoy tasty seasonal treats at intermission.

We start with the a cappella harmonies of Reverb. As their name suggests, this Wammie-winning, all-male, African-American choral group has a powerful sound that will echo in your mind long after the concert is through. Reverb performs Gospel, Doo-Wop and R&B music in traditional African-American Quartet Style. They have toured the Caribbean, Africa and the Persian Gulf and perform in schools, senior centers, prisons and swank soirees, most notably at of one of President Clinton’s Inaugural Balls.

The Wammie-winning ensemble Hesperus will follow with music that fuses Old-World chamber-music traditions with a wide range of other influences that include world music, American Colonial music and Appalachian traditions. Tina Chancey plays violins, viols and other bowed strings. Bruce Hutton plays most stringed instruments in traditional American styles. Vocalist Molly Andrews is an award-winning ballad singer and an accomplished guitarist and banjo player.

The All New Genetically Altered Jug Band performs novelty songs of the 20th century. “Special” Ed Light plays tenor banjo and guitar, sings and adds sound effects. Richard “Bags” Howard is a long-time horn player, sings and plays slide-whistle. Jim “Gutbucketeer” Bunch, known mostly for washtub bass, extends himself with jug, jaw harp and extraneous noises. “Mr. Scratchy” Ron Goad plays washboards with add-ons, from tin cans to bike horn to ethnic drums.

Start the New Year with music and good cheer! For further information on this concert and our extensive program of dances, concerts, story circles, jams, sing-alongs and festivals at our website, fsgw.org.
