iCan Shine Bike Camp To Be Held In Takoma Park

The camp is designed to teach individuals with disabilities how to ride a conventional bike and become lifelong independent riders.

TAKOMA PARK, MD — Takoma Park Safe Routes to School is running a summer camp designed to teach individuals with disabilities how to ride a bike.

The program iCan Shine Bike Camp will be held from June 26-30 at Takoma Academy at 8120 Carroll Ave. Maryland residents between 8-14 years of age can attend the camp for free.

"We understand that the vast majority of people with disabilities never have the experience of independently riding a conventional two-wheel bicycle during their lifetime," the program's website states. "Research shows that over 80% of people with Autism and 90% of people with Down syndrome never experience this thrill. Defying these odds is why we exist."

Sixty volunteers are needed to assist the riders and provide encouragement and motivation. Volunteers must be over 16 and agree to come to the same session every day of camp. They are asked to arrive 15 minutes early for a briefing, so the total commitment is 90 minutes a day.

Volunteering at the camp is Montgomery County SSL approved. Session times: Session 1: 8:30 – 9:45; Session 2: 10:05 – 11:20; Session 3: 11:40 – 12:55; Session 4: 2:00 – 3:15 and Session 5: 3:35 – 4:50.
