International Women's Day: Patricia Hill Collins Holds Discussion In Takoma Park
Renowned social theorist Patricia Hill Collins will present "Black Feminism, Intersectionality and Building Democratic Communities."
TAKOMA PARK, MD — Renowned social theorist Patricia Hill Collins will deliver a presentation in honor of International Women's day and Women's History Month at Montgomery College in Takoma Park Wednesday.
The presentation is titled "Black Feminism, Intersectionality and Building Democratic Communities,” and will be held in the Cultural Arts Center at 6:30 p.m.
Collins is a sociology professor at the University of Maryland, College Park, and formally the head of the Department of African-American studies at the University of Cincinnati.

Collins was the first African-American woman to hold the position of President of the American Sociological Association Council, and was the 100th president of the organization.
In 1990, Collins published Black Feminist Thought: Knowledge, Consciousness and the Politics of Empowerment. The book analyzes oppressions of race, class, sexuality, nation, gender, the systems of power and more.

Collins went on to publish many more books, including: Race, Class and Gender: An Anthology in 1992; From Black Power to Hip Hop: Racism, Nationalism, and Feminism in 2006 and Another Kind of Public Education: Race, Schools, the Media and Democratic Possibilities in 2009.
The talk is free and open to anyone who wishes to attend.
