Have You Noticed Your Toenails Changing?

Treatment options for toenail fungus.

Onychomycosis or fungal toenails is a condition affecting up to 12 percent of the population.  This is not a life threatening condition but can become painful and psychologically disturbing.  There have been many advancements over the years in treating this condition.  Until recently, the choices for disfigured unaesthetic toenails were:

1.  Permanent removal of the nail.

2.  Topical antifungals with roughly a 10-15 percent cure rate.

3.  Oral antifungals such as Lamisil and Sporonox which have a 70 percent cure rate but have many side effects.

Now there are lasers used for the treatment and cure of toenail fungus.  The lasers have no side effects and are more than 80 percent effective.  This therapy requires two treatments approximately four to six weeks apart.

Lastly, there are combined procedures that eliminate the fungus and restore the nail.  These procedures are greater than 95 percent effective.  You can go to NovoNail's website at www.novonail.com for more information on this technique.  I am the only physician in the Baltimore/DC area affiliated with NovoNail.
