TOWSON, MD — A three-alarm fire in a Towson apartment building Monday night prompted firefighters to rescue multiple residents, and nine people were taken to area hospitals, authorities said.

Baltimore County fire officials said firefighters were called around 7:30 p.m. for a report of a fire that began on the third floor of the Berkshires at Town Center Apartments at 204 E. Joppa Road

Crews had the fire out by 8:30 p.m. and were then working to clear smoke from the building.

A resident told WBAL-TV he saw thick smoke and became trapped on his balcony for about an hour.

"I tried to get to the door outside to get to the closest stairway. As soon as I opened the door, thick black smoke was covering everything and the fire was coming below. I tried to go down, but there was even thicker smoke and it was way hotter, so I knew I was stuck," the resident told the TV station. "So, my only chance was staying on the balcony and just wait for help to come, which thank God they did and I'm OK now."
