Plans for ACTC's expansion took an unexpected turn after discovering that the old, original front section, built around the 1930s, was plagued with severe termite and water damage. Therefore it had to be scheduled for demolition instead of renovation. The crew of volunteers gathered for the sixth Saturday of the project, on July 13, to begin the arduous process by razing the double-layered roof. This involved a lot of prying, tenaciousness and just plain brute force. The project's volunteer construction chief Paul Dickover was "on leave" for spending two weeks in the Appalachians as head of the Timonium United Methodist Church's youth summer construction program that rehabs homes in conjunction with the Appalachia Service Project (ASP).
