BCPS To Start School After Labor Day For 2019–2020

A survey about when to start school — before or after Labor Day — was taken before a vote in the Baltimore County Board of Education.

BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD — Public schools will begin after Labor Day in the 2019–2020 academic calendar, the Baltimore County Board of Education decided Tuesday night. The decision means that the school year will start on Tuesday, Sept. 3, according to Baltimore County Public Schools.

The school board conducted a survey before Tuesday's vote on June 11 because of a change in the state law that would allow flexibility around the school start date.

This spring, the Maryland General Assembly overturned an executive order by Gov. Larry Hogan that schools must start after Labor Day.

Baltimore County Board of Education Chair Kathleen Causey said that there were several factors making the post Labor Day start date the logical choice, including the fact that there are still large schools without air conditioning and parents had already made plans based on the premise that schools were starting after Labor Day, WBAL reported.

The state must approve the calendar before it is official.
