Car Driver Dies After Charter Bus Crash: Baltimore County Police

Police said one driver died and eight people were hospitalized after a crash involving a charter bus on Falls Road at Brick Store Road.

BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD — Officials said the driver of an Infiniti that collided with a charter bus Wednesday morning in northern Baltimore County has died. Eight people, including seven students, were hospitalized, according to police.

Joel William Drawbaugh, 19, of Havre de Grace, had been driving the black Infiniti G37x that collided with a bus on Falls Road north of Brick Store Road before 11 a.m.

Based on the preliminary investigation, police said the charter bus got stuck while trying to make a left turn onto northbound Falls Road from eastbound Brick Store Road.

The Infiniti was headed south on Falls Road and as it entered the intersection, it hit the rear driver's side of the bus, according to officials.

Crews were dispatched at 10:57 a.m. to the scene, where they said they found Drawbaugh "heavily entrapped" in the car.

By 11:31 a.m., officials said he had been freed from the vehicle. A helicopter was initially summoned, but it was canceled when he went into trauma arrest, police said.

Drawbaugh was pronounced deceased at the scene, officials reported Wednesday night. Authorities said they did not confirm sooner that he had died so that his family could receive proper notification.

The charter bus contained 41 students from St. Vincent Pallotti High School in Laurel who were on their way to a retreat at River Valley Ranch in Manchester at the time of the collision, officials said.

Eight people — the bus driver and seven students — were taken from the charter bus to Carroll Hospital Center for treatment of injuries that authorities said were not believed to be life-threatening.

Falls Road was closed between Gunpowder Road and Beckleysville Road into the afternoon rush hour for reconstruction, according to police.

The investigation into the collision continues, officials reported Wednesday night.
