A first-grade teacher in the Carroll County Public School System had the surprise of a lifetime, and it was broadcast on TV Thursday afternoon.

Carlie Flanders, who graduated from the Towson University College of Education in 2014, was in her classroom at Elmer Wolfe Elementary School when she received a phone call from Ellen Degeneres.

Then a correspondent for Ellen came into the classroom.

They played a question-and-answer game, and for getting all the correct responses, the students won $20,000 from Shutterfly for their school.

Flanders answered a separate set of questions from Ellen, in which she confirmed that she was meant to be a teacher; she lived with her parents because she couldn’t afford to live alone; and she purchased more than $1,000 worth of school supplies this year for her students with her own money.

According to Ellen’s correspondent, Flanders has also on occasion paid for food for her students, who attend a Title I school, meaning its population tends to be from low-income families.

Flanders received $10,000 from Shutterfly, and Ellen dubbed her a “hero teacher” in the segment, which aired at 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 16.
