Goucher College Mourns Loss of Student

Members of the Goucher College community were processing the news Tuesday of losing one of their own in a hit-and-run crash near campus over the weekend.

Matthew Gabriel, 19, was crossing Dulaney Valley Road outside of the crosswalk near Southerly Road at approximately 1:44 a.m. on Sunday when a Mazda 3 hit him, then left the scene, according to Baltimore County police. Police said Gabriel died at shock trauma Monday morning.

Gabriel, of Austin, TX, was an "outstanding student" majoring in business management and economics who had a "larger-than-life personality," was a "well-liked member of our community" and had a unique sense of humor, Goucher President Sandy Unger reportedly said in a letter to the community. The sophomore was also a "key member" of the Gophers lacrosse team, Unger said.

Goucher held a vigil for Gabriel Monday night, according to the Austin-American Statesman, which reported the college was collectively mourning.

"The death of a student has a deep impact on a close-knit college campus like ours,” Unger said in his letter. "This is a difficult time for all of us. I know we will come together as a community, but please reach out for help if needed."

Goucher was offering counseling for students at Heubeck Hall until 7 p.m. Tuesday, according to The Baltimore Sun.

The family was discussing the possibility of holding a memorial service on campus, ABC 2 News reported.

Students from Gabriel's high school in Texas—Westlake—are wearing "MG" on their helmets in his memory during their upcoming playoff games, the Austin-American Statesman reported.

Funeral arrangements were pending, according to WBAL.

A Middle River woman was charged in the hit-and-run, according to police, who said she was also charged with driving under the influence.
