Hereford High Wins $25K From Samsung

TOWSON, MD - From Baltimore County Public Schools: Hereford High School teacher Weston Fellows and four of his radio and TV engineering students have been named the Maryland winners of the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Contest, and they have won a $25,000 Samsung technology package for the school.

“My students, Ashley Thompson, Jaydeen Weems, Tyler Hilliard, and Zach Lee, are the ones working on the project,” said Fellows. “They are the real stars of the show.”

Samsung Solve for Tomorrow encourages students to solve real-world issues in their community using classroom skills in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM). Fellows and his students were chosen based on their proposal to use STEAM skills to address students’ ability to complete homework on lengthy bus rides. To tackle this project, students will design a prototype portable writing station to allow students to more conveniently complete assignments as they travel to and from school.

As a state winner, the Hereford team is now eligible to be named one of 10 national finalists and to pitch their project to a panel of judges. Seven of these schools will receive $50,000 Samsung technology packages. The other three will progress to the national winner stage, and each will receive a $150,000 Samsung technology package.

All 10 national finalists will be eligible to compete for the Community Choice Award and win an additional $20,000 Samsung technology package based on social media voting.
