Kamenetz, Hafford Hunt for Rich Singles in Towson

The chamber of commerce's leader accepted an executive citation.

With a silly, loosely scripted exchange, the Baltimore County executive and Towson's most visible cheerleader celebrated Towson's recognition for its population of highly eligible bachelors and bachelorettes.

County Executive Kevin Kamenetz and Nancy Hafford, executive director of the Towson Chamber of Commerce, were celebrating Towson's No. 14 rank on a Money magazine list of the best towns for the rich and single. Kamenetz and Hafford are neither, but at the farmers' market on Thursday, they went on the hunt.

"We are now in the land of the rich and single, baby," Kamenetz said, in a "macho" voice.

The pair had few volunteers, except for a few county employees goaded into approaching Kamenetz's podium, but the two appeared unfazed.

Towson's rank on was published last month by the staff of Money magazine on CNN.com. Towson beat out big names in the top 25, including San Jose, CA and Ann Arbor, MI. Kamenetz presented an executive citation to Hafford for the chamber's "efforts to improve quality of life in Towson."

"Do you think the brain is the sexiest part of the body?" the magazine asked in its entry for Towson. "This small community near Baltimore boasts a significant population of professors as the home of Towson University and Goucher College, two of the biggest employers in the area."

The editors then cited Towson's Feet on the Street concerts and array of restaurants and shops on Allegheny Avenue.

The entry had some minor inaccuracies—like saying that visitors to the concerts "saunter down Allegheny Avenue" after the shows (which are on that street), but "who's quibbling?" Kamenetz asked.

"That's because it's no news to us that Towson throws the best parties."

Hafford said it's the second time in as many years that Towson has landed on the list, and noted the appearance of Towson's Chestnut Hill community atop an AOL list of best towns to retire. (AOL is the parent company of Patch.)
