Let's Make A Deal And Hopefully Choose The Right Door

“Your happiness depends on what's happening inside your mind, not on what's happening around you. Happiness comes from WITHIN and is not dependent on others.

Seeking happiness outside ourselves is like waiting for sunshine in a cave facing north" — this is a Tibetan saying.

This is so true. I try to observe this. I do not always do so.

My friend the Wellness Educator and Dance Teacher in Steilacoom, Washington State told me the following in an email today.

“OK, I am going to give you my impression of this one. You may not agree but think about it!

If I were your coach, which I am not, I would recommend that you put away your cannots   and

concentrate on the cans. You motivate us with your ability to communicate and so for your personal goals,

the mind / body connection is so very important. I am convinced that this is a powerful technique in healing

and achieving personal goals. It has worked in healing Mary's broken arm and her ankle; and also with the youngsters

that I coached at the high school level.

OK, now let's start addressing your realistic dancing goals!”

Steven Behr

He is referring to me not being able to walk too well now, not being able to ballroom dance which I miss so much. He believes in the mind/body theory and that it helps a person to heal. I am not sure of that when the x-rays show lots of Arthritis in the knees and the back. My knees and my back are the culprits.

I think I will start to do what Steven desires for me. I will think I am in the possession of good and strong knees and that the back does not hurt. I am trying to believe how he does it.

I use to tell that to my Mom when she visited us every Saturday after I picked her up at the hair salon around 3 P.M. She complained about her back hurting and not one of the doctors told her what to do. This was in 1977. We did not have any computers yet, no one did, we did not have cell phones, and no one did. Our sources of information were from the doctors or to buy a health book which gave a few lines on the illness. It was not worthwhile to purchase the book because it told you so little.

I use to say, Mom stop thinking about it. I was cognizant of her pain, I knew she had it, and in my 43 year old mind, I really could feel her pain. I knew it was there.  If it was now, I would be mature enough to be able to imagine it. Finally after traipsing to different doctors for varied opinions, we found one at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He was understanding and kind and he liked seniors and to try and to help them.

His name was Dr.Udverhyde I have tried to find the correct spelling of his name; I am probably spelling it wrongly. He is probably retired or gone now. He was a fine and caring doctor and we put her ‘back’ into his capable hands. She did well for age 70 in those days of 1977. Times have changed, procedures were done differently and getting an operation then at age 70 was quite unusual for an old lady. Seventy was considered quite up in years for serious surgery. Mom wanted it, my Uncle Louis, her brother was for it and so was my brother. I weighed out of the decision because I was sure she would not make it.My father had died at age 72 from an operation and I was scared.

She did come through quite well and when she recuperated, she was able to be almost pain free and she lived for about five or six more years in pretty good health I do not believe her thinking there was no pain would have made the pain go away. The surgery helped the situation at least 99 percent.

Many believe that the mind plays a good part in people recovering quickly. Maybe so, I cannot vouch for that. Steven is going to tell me some points on his mind/body techniques. We will see if it works for me.

So if happiness comes from within, we still need a push from some added medical help. I do believe that though it seems that operations come with their side effects such as infections and that is a difficult thing to overcome sometimes.

I shall see what road I take. Will it be door number one with mind/body techniques, or door number two with medication and shots in the bad body parts or door number three with surgery? I hope I pick the right door; this is my desire for sure. Let’s Make A Deal, like the TV show is named and I will maybe choose the door that my mind tells me to open.

Let us always hope that we pick the correct door and the world reopens for us with good health and happiness.
