"I've been here four and a half years with Jay and the company, and I always wanted to have my own business, so it kind of worked out," she said.

Despite its unorthodox location on a bridge from a nearby parking garage, Spro and Caragay's coffee have earned numerous honors since it opened in 2006.

"It's been a lot of fun having Jay as my mentor," Hohman said.

Most recently, Spro won the Baltimore City Paper's Best of Baltimore for Best Precious Coffee in 2010. In 2010, Spro opened a new location in Hampden. That shop will remain under its current ownership.

Hohman said she plans to keep many of the same suppliers and stock more local products, but said she'd "rather not discuss" what changes she's planning to make.
