Officer Who Fatally Shot Man During Traffic Stop Identified

The Baltimore County police officer has been placed on routine administrative leave pending the results of an investigation.

BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD — Police have identified the officer involved in a fatal shooting that happened during a traffic stop Tuesday on Interstate 83 in Sparks Glencoe. According to Baltimore County police, the officer involved was Officer Page, a 21-year veteran of the department assigned to the Cockeysville Precinct with no prior police-involved shooting incidents.

According to reports, the traffic stop was the result of a call earlier in the evening when police responded to a home on the unit block of Pheasant Wood Court in Parkton. Officers were told an intoxicated man at the residence — identified as 48-year-old Eric John Sopp — was threatening to assault himself and others.

On their way to the scene, police said Sopp left the home and was possibly still armed. After canvassing the area, Sopp's car was spotted on Mt. Carmel Road entering the ramp to southbound Interstate 83. After locating the car, police were able to stop it.
