Police Install New Speed Camera in Towson

A speed camera on Charmuth Road will begin snapping pics of speeders in front of Hampton Elementary School this week, according to police.

Police said the camera will go live on Wednesday, April 22.

It will be in operation from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Friday, including weekdays when school is not in session and during the summer.

Those driving at least 12 mph over the posted speed limit are in violation and will be notified, according to the Baltimore County Police Department.

For the first 30 days after the camera is activated, violators will receive warnings, police said.

After 30 days, violators will be cited. Tickets will result in a $40 fine, police said.

The Baltimore County Council approved legislation allowing speed cameras in school zones in 2009 and additional cameras in 2011, police said.

The cameras are installed where traffic data and citizen feedback indicate speeding is a problem, according to police.
