In Rare Move, MTA Suspends Services for 48 Hours

The Maryland Transit Administration has only suspended service three times in its 40-year history, Administrator Paul Comfort says.

The Maryland Transit Administration has suspended all of its services this weekend because of weather.

“For at least 48 hours, there will be no MTA service on the street—all day Saturday and all day Sunday,” MTA Administrator Paul Comfort said.

MTA services include light rail, MARC, metro subway, commuter bus, local bus, commuter train and paratransit services. All will be unavailable Saturday and Sunday while blizzard conditions sweep the region.

“Highlighting the rare nature of these events, in the last 40 years, the MTA has suspended service only three times,” Comfort said. “So this is a significant storm.”

Port Closed, Cruise Delayed

The Port of Baltimore’s public marine terminals closed at 7 p.m. Friday and will be closed through Sunday.

Royal Caribbean has made the decision to delay the return of its ship, headed back from an eight-day cruise to the Bahamas, until 7 a.m. Monday. It was originally supposed to return at 7 a.m. Sunday, and the delay will give port personnel more time for snow removal.

The ship will head out again Monday night for a nine-day cruise to the Caribbean.

No Flights at BWI: “At this point, we do not expect any commercial airline flights to operate on Saturday at BWI Marshall,” BWI reports. Some flights may resume Sunday, according to BWI officials, who advise travelers to check with specific airlines.
