Joppa Road Reopens After Gas Leak, Evacuation

Hazmat teams and utility crews handled a gas leak in downtown Towson Tuesday that led to building evacuations.

TOWSON, MD - Buildings were evacuated, the road was closed and a hazmat team was called to East Joppa Road Tuesday due to a gas leak in Towson.

Firefighters were dispatched to the 100 block of East Joppa Road at 11:28 a.m., authorities reported.

BGE shut off the gas and reportedly traced the leak to a spot where a contractor struck the gas line.

The gas main was a large one, according to Baltimore County public safety officials.

The road was shut down from the Joppa Road traffic circle to Virginia Avenue during the response. People were advised to avoid the area.

By 3 p.m., crews had cleared the scene and Joppa Road had reopened, public safety officials advised.
