Towson Seniors Use Dance As Language

Senior dance majors at Towson University to perform original choreography.

I will be the first to tell you that, by all reasonable measures, I can't really dance. On occasion, some divine energy will intervene in such away that something I do on the dance floor seems kind of cool. Let me be clear, these circumstances are purely happenstance.

There are probably many reasons for this lack of ability of mine. Being raised as a run-of-the-mill suburban, white kid probably had something to do with it. Another possibility was told to me by a dance instructor, as a matter of fact (I had a few brief lessons so as not to completely embarrass myself at my sister's wedding reception): Being that I am a drummer, my tendency is to hit the beat on the mark, every time. Dancing (well) requires a bit more tenderness—a cradling of the beat, if you will.

Nevertheless, it doesn't look like being a great dancer is written in the stars for me. Instead, I appear to be doomed to a lifetime of semi-awkward, halting gyrations. What's more, I will always be envious of those who can express themselves through movement.

Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., Towson University seniors majoring in dance will perform original choreographies in  According to the event website, “each one of [the students] is unique. Together they have grown, learned and persevered through their journeys at Towson and through life with dance as their backbone and stepping-stone.”

A mere $15 for general admission is a small price to pay to stand witness as a thoroughly human performance occurs. There's something sensual about watching a dancer use his or her body to paint a picture on the space around them—their canvas.
