Towson Town Center Post Office Slated for Possible Closure

As the postal service looks to close a financial hole, the mall's post office is on the chopping block for a second time.

Dovey Kahn came to the post office at on Tuesday morning with a stack of letters to drop off as she walked the mall.

"It's a nice store for people who shop here," said Kahn, Pikesville resident. "It's also wonderful because they're never very busy."

A small customer base may also be the reasons it's on a list of sites that may close that the United States Postal Service released Tuesday. The document lists 3,653 post offices nationwide examined for possible closure.

The Towson Town Center location is one of a few dozen in Maryland that could close.

The Huffington Post reports via Reuters that the postal service is looking to cut its way back to financial viability and replace service lost through closures by making deals to create outlets in other stores. Many of the post offices slated for closure are in rural areas.

This is the second time that the Towson Town Center post office has been marked for possible closure—the first was in 2009.

Before closing any post office, the postal service has to allow for 60 days of public comments from customers. Customers can also appeal to the Postal Regulatory Commission.

Mall spokesman Greg Harris said Tuesday that management there has not yet received any official notice that the post office might close.
