Towson University President Takes Leave of Absence

Maravene Loeschke had previously battled cancer.

Towson University President Maravene Loeschke is taking a leave of absence because of “health and personal challenges,” according to a letter to the campus community.

Loeschke previously fought cancer of the adrenal gland, but had noted earlier this summer that she was “cancer free and feeling great,” according to the Baltimore Business Journal.

Tim Chandler, provost and vice president of academic affairs at Towson since 2013, will serve as president through December.

“I am confident that under Tim’s leadership, our community will continue its forward momentum,” Loeschke wrote. “During this period, I ask that you give Tim your support and cooperation as he continues to move Towson University forward. Go Tigers!”

The Baltimore Sun notes Loeschke, 67, is an alumna, former professor and dean at Towson. She became president in 2012.
