Woman Died On Ocean City Beach From Suffocation: Police

The Ocean City Police Department says the death of a woman in Ocean City this week was ruled accidental.

OCEAN CITY, MD - The death of a woman on the beach in Ocean City this week was ruled an accident caused by suffocation.

Ashley O'Connor, 30, a vacationer from Plano, Texas, was walking on the beach around 2 a.m. on Monday, July 31, in the area of Second Street.

She was later discovered by beachgoers in a hole covered by sand, police said.

The medical examiner ruled her death accidental by asphyxiation caused by suffocation, according to officials.

"It remains to be determined at this time if O’Connor fell into the hole or climbed in on her own accord," the Ocean City Police Department said in a statement on Wednesday, Aug. 2.

During the process of the police investigation, part of the beach was closed. Investigators recovered the body at 4:15 p.m. on Monday, July 31, officials said, and the beach reopened to the public at 5 p.m.
