You Tell Us: Has the Recession Forced You To Delay Car Repairs?

Towson-based AAA Mid-Atlantic released a new study this week.

If your car broke down tomorrow, could you afford a costly repair?

According to a survey released Monday by Towson-based AAA Mid-Atlantic, 25 percent of Americans couldn't afford a $2,000 repair, and one in eight couldn't afford a $1,000 bill.

The survey included 1,009 drivers nationwide.

"The economy has taken a toll on many Americans resulting in them neglecting their cars and leaving them at an increased risk for very expensive repair bills,” said Ragina C. Averella, a AAA Mid-Atlantic spokeswoman, in a statement. “Many people rely on their cars for their livelihood and losing access to them could be financially devastating during an already troubling economic time.”

Of the rest of the respondents, 40 percent said they would be able to pay for a $2,000 repair with money from a savings account, 20 percent would pay with a credit card and 11 percent would have to borrow from elsewhere.
