After Stabbing, Classes Canceled at Bowie State University

The university will hold a community gathering on campus to help comfort students and staff.

Classes are canceled today at Bowie State University after a student fatally  in a residence hall Thursday night.

Dominique Frazier, 18, of Washington, DC, died after an argument with her roommate led to a physical confrontation and stabbing, according to state police.

The roommate, a 19-year-old District Heights woman, turned herself in to police custody. She is not being named until charges are filed against her.

“Bowie State administration, faculty, staff and students offer deepest condolences to the family of the victim Dominique T. Frazier, 18, a resident in CMRC from Washington, D.C. This kind of senseless violence is difficult to understand,” a statement from Bowie State University said. “The entire university community is distressed that this type of violence has occurred within our midst.”

The university will hold a community gathering for comfort and reflection at noon today in the James Leonidas Physical Education Complex.

According to the university, some students who live in the Christa McAuliffe Residential Community dormitory, where the altercation took place, have been temporarily displaced due to the police investigation. The university has arranged to accommodate them in other space on campus.

No one else was injured and police say it was an isolated incident.

“We understand from police that there is no apparent ongoing threat to the campus community and it is safe for students and employees,” a statement from the university said.

Counselors from the University Counseling Center are on hand to assist students or staff in need of support.

Bowie State University was founded in 1865 and is the oldest historically black college in Maryland. About 5,500 attend the school and nearly 1,400 live on campus.

The campus has seven residence halls according to the college’s website.
