Three Maryland Colleges Make Forbes Top 100 Colleges List

Three Maryland colleges cracked the top 100 of the 2015 Forbes’ Top Colleges list.

The schools and their rankings on the list are:

• No. 27: U.S. Naval Academy
• No. 62: Johns Hopkins University
• No. 93: University of Maryland, College Park

Pomona College in California topped the list.

Of the Naval Academy the magazine says: “This year, the school is the No. 2 public college and No. 27 in the nation. It was established in 1845 and its mission is “To develop Midshipmen morally, mentally and physically.” Students must have a congressional or presidential nomination to apply.”

Johns Hopkins stands out “for the high caliber of its STEM academics, although two of its most popular majors are international studies and writing seminars,” Forbes says. “JHU has produced 36 Nobel Prize winners, with four on the current faculty. Notable alumni include former President Woodrow Wilson, billionaire businessman Michael Bloomberg, and conservationist Rachel Carson.”

Forbes called the University of Maryland the flagship of the state’s university system. The description said in part: “It is considered a “Public Ivy” institution, specializing in research, innovation and entrepreneurship. … Notable alumni include Google co-founder Sergey Brin, “Seinfeld” co-creator Larry David and U.S. Congress House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer.”
