Blog: The Gotye Rush
Who can back away from Gotye? Australian artist conquers the U.S.

It's been a few weeks now, and Australian electronic pop-star Gotye is literally running over the competition everywhere with his hit "Somebody That I Used To Know." The song is a simple, energetic and mystical sounding ballad. With a quiet reserve to his sound, Gotye seems to be sitting on the top of the world with this song. I have the links below, warning, at the beginning of the video, you see an ugly foot and part of his leg. Not exactly the most exciting introduction, but very well done video regardless.

Don't forget the songs' inspiration on other artists or people that just want to have a good time. A group from Canada, called Walk Off The Earth, played a cover of Gotye's song using five people on one guitar. It was so popular that Ellen Degeneres had the group play on her show, and at the end of their performance, gave all of them their own guitars. Their video is just as inspiring as the original song. Walk Off The Earth has many other covers as well as their own music on youtube, and they've been playing in many places. Still, it was Gotye that really got them going. Enjoy their link. The gentleman with the beard on the right is my favorite.

For the Star Wars fans out there that aren't as pleased with George Lucas and the first three episodes, oh yeah, there's a Gotye cover dedicated to the Star Wars Depression. It's both extremely entertaining as well as very well done.

The reason why I'm talking about this song and these videos is because of how out of the "norm" the song is compared to the rest of the Top 40s list. It's simple, elegant, with no distortion on a guitar or crazy intricate sounds. Just a drum beat, a guitar, and a very talented pair of singers. We need more like this artist, and I recommend looking right in the Westminster area for these people. I've heard a lot of musicians in our town and they sound so good! As much as I like listening to Gotye, I think we have some bands from the area that should be up there next to him on the Top 40 list.
