Does "Handicap Accessibility" mean it's Affordable?

This blog is brought to you by Todd A. Stull - President of Alone Eagle Remodeling LLC Alone Eagle Remodeling is a Specialty Bathroom Contractor in the Harrisburg, PA area.

Not always.  The cost of medical and construction equipment continues to rise.  This causes a burden for our seniors and handicapped folks to have all the necessary components that will aid in everyday life.  Throughout the different options of medical funding and organizations that provide therapy and services, there are plenty of great resources to provide personal equipment such as wheelchairs, braces, walkers, crutches and body lifts, however, the remodeling process can be less abundant with organizational approvals for needed products and accessories that aid layout for a functional room.

The best option for a handicap bathroom is the versatility of a Barrier Free Shower & Wet Room using porcelain tiles and linear drains.  This allows us to build in all the custom accessories like benches, niches, fixtures and spray wands exactly where you need them to be.  Most organizations that arrange these projects are funded through Medicaid or other state programs in which approvals are hard to obtain for these custom but required measures.  You as the homeowner may have to pay the difference between the approved price vs. the job price.

Understandably, a custom tile job may not always be the situation, so I am always searching for an affordable but long term and durable solution to meet your needs.   As I’ve recently discovered since becoming an Authorized Dealer for Ella Bath, there is a whole menu of options including walk in tubs, low curb shower units, roll in shower units, barrier free shower units and cantilevered bathtubs.  These products come in choices of acrylic or fiberglass finishes with slip resistant patterns molded into the floors.

Ella Walk in Bathtubs have different package options and a variety of accessories such as a standard roman tub faucet, body spray wand, molded seat, jet spray attachments and attached grab bars.  The door allows you to walk right in the unit and sit or stand.  When closed, the unit will seal shut allowing the tub to be filled for a leak free bath.  This is a simple one step solution for showering or bathing.

Ella Shower Units come in many different sizes and packages offering both basic and upgrade features.  If you do not need a mounted shower seat because you have to roll into the unit with a wheelchair, we can simply opt out of some of their product options.  The wall surrounds have attached plywood backing and metal rod reinforcements for strength, providing a solid structure for mounting grab bars and seats.  If you like tiled walls for your shower we can still use a barrier free shower base, add a proper tile wall preparation and waterproofing membranes to the shower area.

Ella Cantilevered Bathtubs have a nice combination of a skirt platform with molded grab bar handles to help enter and exit the tub.  If your home has one bathroom and you don’t want to convert to a shower for resale purposes one of these bathtubs will be a looker!
