Hello, Betty. Pleased to meet you!

A stroll through Mount Airy took me back to simpler times.

A beautiful day called for a long walk through Mount Airy this past week.  As we made our way downtown my baby girl squeeled in delight with the warm air blowing on her soft cheeks.  So loud, you could probably hear her across town!

After stopping at The Vintage Coffee House and the Mt. Airy Library we meandered through hilly streets with well manicured lawns and homes with front doors that scream "welcome."  It felt peaceful and good to breathe in Spring.

We were almost home when we approached a little old lady headed our direction.  She politely stood to the side letting us pass and as we did she peered in at a sleepy baby and said, "Hello, I'm Betty.  What a beautiful baby!  What's your name and where do you live?"  Somewhat surprised, we engaged in small talk and I couldn't help but think of my own grandmother who passed away over 10 years ago.

Betty pointed to a charming house and said proudly, "I've lived here for 52 years, my husband died 10 years ago of melanoma.  You should come visit me, just knock on the door."

Something tells me this would make Betty's day.  And mine too.  There is  something to be said for being able to just knock on your neighbor's door without notice.  Betty is probably used to a simpler life, simpler times and I bet she has wonderful stories to tell.

I might just take her up on her invitation.   Maybe I will learn a thing or two from her 52 years here.  It could just be the beginning of a very special relationship.
