Did You Know?: History of Charles Carroll Elementary
Charles Carroll Elementary school, situated on Littlestown Pike/Highway 97, has a rich history dating back to the Civil War.

Charles Carroll Elementary is one of the most historic and longest standing educational institutions in the Carroll County community.
It stands on Littlestown Pike/Highway 97, a route Civil War troops--both Union and Confederate--traveled as they left the Shriver's homestead and traveled on to the Battle of Gettysburg.
An institution was built on the spot of the current Charles Carroll in 1921, but was destroyed only seven years later October 23, 1928 in a fire. The community banded together as classes were transferred to local halls to limit the instructional days lost.

The cornerstone of the present building was laid on May 9, 1929. That school building remains as the center for the community, despite concerns about the building's structure and attempts to close it down.
A May festival is held each year to celebrate Charles Carroll's continued standing and as a reminder of the blaze that destroyed the original structure.
