March Madness Hits Home as Winters Mill Grad Goes to 'Big Dance'

Penn State junior Cammeron Woodyard played on the Winters Mill state title basketball team three years ago. Thursday at 2:10 p.m., he will be playing Temple in the NCAA Tournament.

March Madness is in full swing -- brackets and bets are flying around and everyone is guessing who will be the surprise team to advance against all odds. But there are a few Westminster residents in particular who will be glued to their televisions at 2 p.m. Thursday afternoon.

Cammeron Woodyard grew up in Westminster and attended Winters Mill High School. He played basketball under coach Dave Herman and his senior year the team won the state championships.

Woodyard is now in his junior year at Penn State and this will be his first trip to the NCAA tournament as part of the Nittany Lions basketball team. The team will face off against Temple today, the game is scheduled to be broadcast on TNT.

Coach Herman couldn't say enough about Woodyard's character and commitment to both school and athletics.

"He’s just an unbelievable kid. He's doing really well in school, he really likes his team mates and he likes the school. He comes back in the summer and helps out at camp and he’s really good with the kids," Herman said.

According to ESPN, Woodyard, who is a 6' 5", 210 pound guard, is averaging about 10 minutes of playing time and two points per game. Coach Herman said that Woodyard has started a few games this season, "it varies from game to game depending on the situation."

Penn State (19-14) is the No. 10 seed and Temple (25-7) is the No. 7 seed going into today's game set in Tuscon, AZ.

Certainly Coach Herman won't be alone in rooting for Woodyard today, although he may be considering game strategy more than the rest of us.

"He’s just a really good example for kids around here, he’s the total package – good kid, good student, good athlete," Coach Herman said.
