My Trip to Murder Mystery Dinner Theater: Rights of the Disabled

By Charles Rachel

I recently had the opportunity to attend a murder mystery dinner theater in Baltimore Maryland with some friends and Co-workers from The Arc Carroll County. At a murder mystery dinner theater, the objective is for the audience while eating dinner to be detectives and try to solve the cases of the murders the actors are portraying. It is similar to the game clue where you figure out who the killer is. My friends and I enjoyed the show. However, the theater has no accommodations for those with physical disabilities such as wheelchairs as the law requires under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). As a disabled man myself with many friends in the same situation, I consider myself an advocate for the disabled. I would like to see this law better enforced and anyone in non compliance made to comply. The disabled should be able to enjoy events in their communities without worrying about accessibility. This would help provide Maryland’s disabled residents with a higher quality of life.
